Imagine a situation where you are no longer motivated to work at your current marketing agency, where you are doing SEO. You start struggling to gain new knowledge, you stop learning new skills, and your team lead lacks experience as well. You have an additional ±3k$ to invest in the SEO field. Do you quit your current job and look for another one, start freelancing, or maybe start your own project with the mentioned amount of money? What is your next step?

I'd take the money and not invest it in SEO anymore (but I'm a fast quitter, so probably not the best person to give advice, but you've asked for opinions so I gave you mine :p)

But if I had to stay in this industry I would probably invest in a project of my own instead of starting freelancing as SEO.... Or, if you really have the assets / resources to provide in-demand SEO services you can upgrade your BHW account to Jr. Vip and start selling in the marketplace. I'm not sure how active the marketplace still is, but I think you have more chances to success here than if you were to join freelancing sites and compete with the millions of other SEOs.

"I'd take the money and not invest it in SEO anymore" and the reason why?

With the given capital I would start my own business like making a blog or Shopify store.

But I would need some $$ for survival because any business will take 6-12 months to get profitable.

it's become too expensive
it's too risky
I'm an easy quitter
it's become more tech-oriented than I'm willing to, or capable of adapting to

Switch jobs or start freelancing if you have leads.

3k isn't enough to start up any meaningful SEO projects you can live off in the short run. Assuming you only have 3k saved up.

If you’re losing motivation and not learning new skills at your current job, you have a few options. With an extra $3k, consider starting your own SEO project or side hustle. This allows you to apply your skills in a new way and learn independently. If you prefer stability, look for a new job where you can continue growing in SEO. Freelancing is also a viable option, giving you flexibility and control over your work. Evaluate what excites you most and aligns with your long-term goals.

If you are losing motivation take a break and invest the money as your secondary income don't lost the job until you make the secondary income as much as possible

Because, if you have only 1 income source it will be more complicated if you lose the job too , so think twice before you take any steps
