So the EC have decided to fuck ICANN over the whois system with their big veiny GDPR dick. From May 25th it will be illegal for them to publish public information via the whois system.

What this means is that on that date the whois system as it stands is illegal under EU law. If ICANN do not comply who the fuck knows what the EC will do to show off how big their European dick is.

As it stands the GDPR privacy laws say that no personally identifiable information can be showed via whois so if you rely on a service that needs access to IP / DNS / Nameserver information you will no longer have access to this come May 25th.

Hopefully ICANN will be able to convince the EC that Nameserver information is not "personally identifiable" information and continue providing this information as many services throughout the world rely on this (and more) to continue operating but you can bet that there are many legacy systems out there relying on other information that will no longer work as a result of this and won't be updated.

P.S even if you are not in Europe these GDPR laws are going to have an effect on your life

lol... since when it is Nameserver information some kind of personal info? I don't get it.
 
Good for PBN owners though right? Takes the complication out of domain registration footprints :-)

I dont think its nameserver info as much as personal info - GDPR is about being able to identify an individual and if there is any identification of an individual then it is classed as personal information by GDPR.
 
I've been looking at this gdpr thing and it's a typical load of old bollocks from the EU.

If a company (any company in any country) has a users details stored on their website, and they get hacked and that data stolen - then every single customer can sue you for $xx,xxx each.

It's going to instantly bankrupt thousands of businesses because you can bet your bottom dollar that there'll be lawyers setting up similar systems to the PPI claims thing, where they'll go ambulance chasing looking for business.

It's the EU and their stupid privacy laws that have made google analytics practically useless - you can't see what search term someone used to get to your website in case it compromises their privacy.

In the meantime people are posting their entire lives all over social media.

Go figure.
 
Yeah good for pbn owners, fewer expenses on domains. Overall I don't see anything bad about that.

I've been waiting this for ages. It's nonsense that you can go and see who owns which domain. Privacy at it's finest ;P
 
Also good for website owners, will not receive spam via whois email

It will be not so good if they don't comply to the letter of the law and get a fine of EUR 20million and it bankrupts ICANN and huge chunks of the internet no longer work. GDPR is very far reaching and there are massive amounts of conflicting information coming straight from their expert advisers.

Currently there is no consensus opinion on whether IP addresses are personally identifiable for example. If IPs are personal information then maybe nameservers are as you can get more info from that and so on, there is more grey area in these laws than there is black and white.

I agree personal information shouldn't be thrown out willy nilly but it seems like the EC don't want any kind of register to be available, from their attitude about this anyway.

You sure read the source very quickly. The register is a good source for this stuff.

If you think that I wrote the article or my ramblings are in anyway related to the quality of the source article then you are wrong.

Just saying that the article lacks information and is biased.
 
ICANN is based out of california so it won't be illegal for them to publish whois information.

This is the issue that a lot of people are not seeing.

For the PBN owners it could be decent because they might not have to enter fake whois or tick the whois privacy box but probably Google and other registrars will still have access to some or all info that will necessitate doing this anyway.

For service owners that rely on the whois system being how it is any small changes could mean that they stop working entirely. For legacy systems that rely on the syntax remaining the same or similar they could stop working entirely.

For the record there are lots of US based companies that are also having to comply with the GDPR, ICANN after all is a US based company so to think that this will have no effect on companies outside the US is not correct.

Yepp and for those who are saying it's not valid for the non uk companies, you are not correct! Any site dealing with EU customers comes into gdpr. Not sure how that is going to affect the domain whois though. The company I work for is from eu and we are making a lot of changes for complying with the policies. Sleepless nights lol.

It's any company dealing with any EU person, not just UK customers - it's massive.
