After years of downloading torrents it caught up with me. My new ISP has limited my bandwidth because of downloading stuff.

Its not entirely your fault - Governments have been clamping down HEAVILY on us torrent maniacs - They monitor your usage. and when red flags go up.Your downloading too much.they contact your ISP and tell them to either block you or limit usage.usually tell you to stop.

They are all doing it nowadays with ATT I have a limit of 150GB bandwidth a month, but if they had the speed that was 2x faster Id have it increased to 250GB a month. They actually got rid of the 6Mb/s speed here a few months ago.Its pathetic that there excuse is that people don't really need the fast internet speed, when more and more streaming is in 1080p.

A 3 1/2 minute music video is in the range of 120-150MB now if you want one in 1080p.

My wife talked to them. They said they were gonna put on 256k for three months. Is that 256 KB a minute or something. I'm paying $60 a month for one of their better plans.

The Government has nothing to do with BW limiting. It's the ISP preserving resources for other customers. Your DSL account or Cable account doesn't charge enough for the resources you're consuming so they limit your account. They usually don't look at this until complaints start rolling in about slow connection speeds or dropped connections from other customers. Then they notice the users hogging resources and effectively blocking out other paying customers. They throw BW limiters on those accounts and the neighborhood is happy once again.

Be happy if they're just limiting you and not reporting you. Those letters from the MPAA are no joke. If you have more than one service in your area it might be time to switch for awhile.

256Kb/s per second not 256KB per minute. If you can switch to another company do it. $60 for that speed is a freaking rip off.

I'm not paying $60 for 256k. They are now limiting me to 256k for the next 3 months.

Oh there will be no more torrent downloading from my house. It was good while it lasted.

Not sure what ISP you're using but with Verizon when they throw a 256k limiter on your account it's upload speed. A typical account is 768k/3M so they limit you to 256k/1M or cut your speed down to a third. They don't care what plan you're on BTW. They're protecting the neighborhood. They'd rather have one po'd customer than 20. They did this on one of my business accounts that has to upload images 3 times a week. Said I was consuming to much resource so they imposed a limiter. I explained my business situation and they lifted it with a warning. I moved my SB junk all to VPS accounts and so far not come up on radar.

Tell them to cut the crap of you quit of their shitty services. Once a guy I know got this similar issue, he called to ask why and they told him something about excesive traffic, blablabla, in the end the magic words from the operator "But if you upgrade to our new service, you can get unlimited bandwidth". After 20 minutes of my friend shouting the hell off at the phone with every single one speaking at him, he got the restriction lifted off.

Watch out, most of the time they do it to sell you a service upgrade or smth.

I wish the telecom companies in America were not so greedy and actually improved their interet speeds and quality of service. When I was first with ATT for the first year the dsl went out whenever it rained because they were to cheap to fix it.

The Internet here is the main reason I'm moving within the next 6 months, its too hard to compete when the Internet is too slow for a much higher price, and a very low bandwidth cap on it.

if you didn't sign up for a fixed-term, fuck 'em and make a new contract with another ISP which doesn't give a damn

that 256k can mean two things, your maximum allowed download speed will be 256 kilobyte/sec which is not the end of the world, but it can be 256 kilobit/sec too which sucks big time, because your max dl speed will be around 30 kilobyte/sec which won't be enough for usual browsing

You could get a new connection with no bandwidth limitations, see the contract if it mentions something like fair use policy, u could get a vps for ur apps like xrumer and senuke if that's also one of your problems.

A friend of me who was working in a big ISP told me... each 1000 GB cost them around $9

I've been with this ISP for about 3 months on a 12 month contract.

This 256kb is shitty. It is like using dial up. It was either this or they cancel it for 3 months. There are no other ISP nearby my area. Can't even load a youtube video.

Ask them if they have a business plan that allows for unlimited bandwidth or get a 3G card and a VPS to run most of your programs from.
