Hi, I'm a bit dusty and rusty in this and I know things have changed.

I just wanted to know if yahoo answers is still a good place to increase my ranking. Is it penalized by Penguin?

Also, my main account is a yahoo e-mail account. I don't use it for SEO related stuff. But is it in risk if I use other accounts in yahoo answers? or only the accounts in yahoo answers are in risk?
 
Depending on what you're advertising and your sales page, it can be a decent converter. As for ranking, we don't know, but we can assume that it adds authoritative value and if the question is ranked high on google's search results then it should be good to have.
 
Thank you very much. What about risking my main account? Is it at risk even if I don't use it for promoting, like the fake ones?
 
Yahoo answers gets me CB traffic along with strange bans. I really have no idea why. They seem to ban often now.
 
Although YA can be a good source of backlinks for ranking purposes, the main value of them is the direct follow-thru, non-SEO based traffic they provide. Some people who use YA heavily report the targeted traffic they receive from the links is as much, and/or better than that received from SEO methods.
 
They are no-follow links, but I think they help your backlink network seem more natural.
 
Yahoo links are no-follow. These links can give you targeted traffic by answering relevant questions. However, if you get few links, they will lose any value and you need to be a level-2 user for you to able to post a link. You may also want to use more effective techniques by acquiring links from various high authority websites like a mix of do-follow and no-follow Web 2.0s, blogs posts, wiki, press releases, social bookmarking, article directory submission, etc.
 
No direct SEO/ranking benefits, yes, in that the YA links are no-follow, thus don't contribute to your page ranking by itself. But the truth remains that many 1-3 position, or page 1 results for a niche word are yahoo answers pages, so if your answer is on one of those pages, you're going to get some follow-through search engine traffic.
 
Always good when targeting long tail keywords. Just have to get clever with your questions and answers, which should always be none promotional and offer an effective non spammy solution.

So far, I've been doing it the first way. But I think maybe I'll change to the second way, or maybe alternate between the two.

Just to be safe, I post one answer related to my site for every 5 answer that are completely unrelated. Does that protect me? or is it unnecessary? And so far, I've been able to find relevant questions so I don't have to ask them meself.

From what I understand, it's really only still good for sales pages. I wouldn't use it for anything else. Even then, it's really only good for specific niches and topics like "getting over your exgf" or something like that.
 
Yahoo Answers is still a great way to market your business but most likely does not add a permanent "SEO boost" to your site. As Zebrahat mentioned you can post questions that can rank very well in Google, especially for long-tail terms. Then Google will send some traffic to those questions and a portion of that traffic will filter down to your site if they click the link left in the answer.

A great way to grab this traffic is to ask a question and then answer it from a different account. Then vote it as the best answer from yet another account. But YA has gotten much stricter recently and if you ask a question and answer it with the same IP (even if the accounts are different) your accounts are likely to be banned or at least restricted for a period of time. I've been working slowly on YA. I have several accounts and I log in with a maximum of 3 a day. I don't ask or answer a question more than once a day. I do vote on my answers as many times I can. For every account, I also answer 3 non-related questions. So far, no banning or problems.

The results have been slow but they're there. I also consider any traffic coming from yahoo mail a result of this work, because I figure it must be the person who asked the question who got an email with my answer. I hope with time I get better results. I don't dedicate more time to it because I have writing to do and because I don't want to attract more attention. In fact, some Indian guy who is spamming about the same topic got detected by one of the top contributors and she posted all his questions denouncing him.

Speaking of which, I updated my accounts with photos of professional-looking people and hid my activity.
 
I remember someone who sold site at flippa was getting 90% traffic from YA..its really good quality traffic..if you have good offer on your site ..it can converts really well...You need 2nd tier account to post link there.. and use it wisely

Just to give you some updating in case someone is trying a similar approach.

Traffic increased a bit then went away then increased a bit again. I don't know if it builds up with time. I hope so.

So far, I've been able to find related questions from other users so I answer in their questions.

In addition to getting a bit of traffic from yahoo answers, I get some from yahoo mail, which makes me think that it's the person who asked the question and clicked on the link on their yahoo mail accounts.

Results are not impressive, but they're not zero. About 3 to 5 visits on good days. As I said, I hope this increases with time.

I usually use only 3 or 4 accounts a day, but one time I used about 6. So far, no banning or blocking. I dedicate about 2 hours a day to it.

I also unplug the modem after logging off with each account and then replug it before logging in with another. That changes the IP's last two numbers but not the first ones. I think it does qualify as a different IP for yahoo.
