Is Wikipedia about to close down ? At the top of the website, I see the following message.

Wikipedia still can't be sold.
24 December: An important update for readers in the UK
Please don't scroll past this 1-minute read. We're sorry to interrupt, but it's Sunday, 24 December, and it will soon be too late to help us in our year-end fundraiser. We ask you to reflect on the number of times you visited Wikipedia this year and if you're able to give £2 to the Wikimedia Foundation. If everyone reading this gave just £2, we'd hit our goal in a few hours.
In the age of AI, access to verifiable facts is crucial. Wikipedia is at the heart of online information, powering everything from your personal searches to emerging AI technologies. Your gift strengthens the knowledge of today and tomorrow.
If Wikipedia is one of the websites you use most and if the knowledge you gain here is valuable, please give £2. Every contribution helps: every edit, every gift counts.

They should show ads.
I respect them for not showing ads... but they need to re-think there business model, if they can't sell Wikipedia..

I've donated too them, as would hate too see them going out of business, as over the years, I have used it more times, that i can begin to count.

Shame as it's an OG website, with huge value and knowledge.

no worry if they can't sell it they can give it to me for free as Xmas present I will take good care of it ;-)

Same notice every year, Wikipedia is most likely not going anywhere.
As @roydan says, same message every year asking for donations. They will be here next year + there are very easy ways for them to raise funds via donations as a non profit, same as many big open source tools.

Would be an amazing present! I would 100% change it too a "for profit" business.

I've seen other donations but I think what got me this time was

We're sorry we've asked you a few times recently, but it's Sunday, 24 December, and it will soon be too late to help the nonprofit behind Wikipedia
Sounded to me like funds are running dry.

Hopefully, fingers crossed.

I would by buy wikipedia for a $1 and turn it into a parasite :)
You know, if they had some more incentives from a digital marketing perspective, I would 100% donate a hell of a lot more money! Sure many of us on here would.

I went and donated some.

Their donation funnel is brilliant, we can learn a lot from the flow and upsales/offers to change to subscription.

I thought exactly the same.. I'm receptive to ignore a lot of shit/begging

But my heart dropped for a second, thinking an OG was about to go out of business.

Even though I donated a little bit, I feel good for doing so. Gotta keep the bills paid some how.

Always a good day to donate to a non profit. Wikipedia has many faults for misinformation, many amusing moments for misinformation from funny university kids, many good pieces of information and many benefits for SEO, many many ways to make money from Wikipedia and associated tools/sites.

Wikipedia is the 7th most visited website, running and rocking for several decades,
It's not going anywhere soon, probably changing somehow in the future but that notice has nothing to do with it,
Just a typical donation notice that has been there for several times across the years, nothing new

Some would say my uncle is scrooge out of the christmas carol because I'm tighter than a ducks ass when it comes to spending.. In this case, I did.. I just hope there isn't nothing behind the scenes happening, that may impact there services.

Wikipedia is garbage, they deserve to be dead in no time.

Good for some seo juice and BH, but still garbage on top of everything.

So fuk them :D

From time to time they always put up a notice like this, this has been happening since 1852
