I think last time I did some research and most folks who did not start witht that platform back in the golden ages seem to not recommend it, since it had degraded a lot from its former self. What is your experience?

Is this your observation or ??

Maybe in the old days there was not much opportunities but now might be and increase in their pupolarity and there are more chances people really recomend it, you also have fiver that is another good option with good oportunities just be aware of people scamming that in both upwork and fiver.

Writing from a customer perspective, I am still & happily using upwork to place orders for coding stuff.

Probably it’s only me, but in my experience upwork has turned into a shit show for devs. If you are a client, it is a fckin awesome platform (tested.. it has saved my ass more than once), but the platform cost and the competition has made it totally pointless for me atleast.

BHW on the other hand is 10 times better when it comes to getting clients.

Are you there to get cheap workers or high quality work and you are willing to pay for the quality? That would be interesting to know.

How can one as a SW dev get clients on BHW? I have thought about it, but was sure we also have too much competition here.

I can only speak as a Client, IMO, Upwork is still great, HOWEVER, in recent years, many so called "Developers" or "ChatGPT Developers" turned up and purchased the Upwork Boost thing to takeover the recommendations tab, the quality of work definitely decreased.

I mostly use Upwork because they accept escrow and is straight to the point website. No BS, on-site communication and everything.

I wouldn't recommend using Upwork if you aren't prepared to pay more than $50/h though, better to stick to Fiverr then.

Upwork is great if you want cheap, quality work. Everybody is ready to work for peanuts these days.

High five

Not high five, LOL. I am a dev and I am sure not working for peanuts. I guess freelancing will not be my choice, if guys like you are potential clients...

I am going there with a clear description of my requirements and a budget. Since I can do most coding I need (Selenium, Python, php) myself, I can estimate the effort and then evaluate the offers if these are realistic or not. I found many guys being realistic and delivering excellent work. This saves me time for other relevant things.

Price certainly is a factor and I am not going to pay Western European rates when I have to experience delays because of different time zones, uncle X and aunt Y of the coder suddenly being ill, power outages, having to explain things three times even after the detailed requirements, get ChatGPT answers and -code etc.

What's their main competition?

from my experience, it was better somewhere between 2020 and 2022 when everything was booming. Nowadays there isn't a lot of great job offers as before. But still, there is decent amount of work if you find a stable client to work with.

Not sure to be honest. Fiverr isn’t a direct competitor since it is most well known for those $5 jobs. I guess it will be guru or toptal.
I agree on fiverr and guru, toptotal I don't know.

Another competitor I see is ChatGPT. Customers spend hours to watch YT videos on how to use it, make some requests and estimate the efforts of a good coder to be minimal.

For now at least upwork is a stronger brand than either of those

I kw haha. When I said “competition”, I meant other competitors bidding for the same job, and quoting lower budget.

You need to build a reputation to be competitive at Upwork.
Still, there are people making millions in there.
