I’ve noticed some sites with moderate backlinks but strong topical clustering outperforming stronger backlink profiles.

Are you focusing more on:

  • Topical depth?
  • Internal linking?
  • Content silos?

Or backlinks still king?

Let’s discuss.

I believe topical authority is king, because the potential customers recognise you and your brand driving up your sales and word of mouth. That being said backlinks do have their use but come slightly second in ranking your websites/blogs. The best would be a good mix of both. And also don't forget the testimonials. People do and want to do what they see other people do.

Its a RIGHT combination of everything which helps you in Search Engines.. If you have got great backlinks and very thin website without solving User intent, then you will most likely remain unnoticed, and vice versa if you have exceptional Onsite content but Zero backlinks then also you remain invisible..
So make an Exceptional Landing page(Service/product-based) and create many linked to it hubpages as informative content ~~
then Get Links from Relevant Established websites. You should do well with this..

Good Luck

Yes, topical authority is becoming more important. Sites with detailed content and good internal links can outrank sites with more backlinks. Backlinks still help, but having strong, organized content usually matters more now.

I think topical authority is very important now. If your content covers one topic deeply and clearly, it can rank well. Backlinks still matter, but strong structure and internal linking help a lot.

Topical authority is nothing without trust, and trust is not something that can be generated via internal links, content silos, or topical depth. Trust is only generated via external sources, in other words backlinks. If you have massive topical authority but nothing close to the trusted seeds is linking to you, you will still be outranked by the sites that are linked to from such sites. Links are votes on the internet - they're what the web is built on. To not have a web highly influenced by backlinks we'd have to come up with another method of voting.

Backlinks still work, but building isolated links doesn’t move the needle anymore.

What’s actually winning today is topical authority combined with a well-structured internal architecture and carefully selected, relevant backlinks.

Yes, But how will google know that you are a trusted source if you haven't got any references?

right now, topical authority feels stronger than just piling up backlinks. sites with deep coverage, smart internal linking, and clear silos are outperforming heavier link profiles. backlinks still matter, but they work best when supporting strong topical depth not replacing it.

You’re absolutely right - topical depth, internal linking, and content silos are just as important as backlinks today. In fact, before scaling backlinks aggressively, we always focus on strengthening these three areas first so Google can properly understand, trust, and position the site.

Once the topical structure is solid, backlinks have a much stronger and faster impact. Without that foundation, even strong links often underperform because Google doesn’t clearly recognize the site’s relevance. Content remains the core signal - backlinks amplify it.

Both matter, but today topical authority carries more weight. Backlinks help, but content depth and structure are just as crucial.

It’s always a combination of content depth and backlinks, you have the flexibility to choose the right balance to optimize your SEO campaign. Once you’ve invested time and budget into SEO, you should develop multiple factors evenly to achieve the best results.

Imo, topical authority is stronger for consistency and long-term growth now

But backlinks still act as the push that helps clusters rank faster

Best results usually come from strong topical depth supported by quality links

yes, topical authority is important, when you build it along with backlinks - it helps in longer run.

Most people view this as a competition between topic authority and backlinks. In practice, I don't see a question of which is stronger here. Topic authority determines how high you can rank, while backlinks determine how quickly you get there. But many forget that backlinks outside of a coherent topical context don't accumulate well. They spike and don't grow. When links reinforce an already well-defined topical structure, they behave completely differently, so I wouldn't say one has replaced the other. Rather, it's the interaction between the two that has changed.

I think topical authority is the main thing now, and backlinks support it.

If your site covers a topic deeply, with strong internal linking and clear content clusters, it builds real relevance.

Backlinks still matter. They help boost and validate your content. But without strong topical structure, links alone aren’t as powerful.

Backlinks still matter, but they're not everything now. I've seen pages rank just by improving topical depth and internal linking. If your structure is clear and content is well connected, you don't need a huge link profile. It's more about balance these days.
