Is too much paid traffic dangerous?

I had trouble finding a definitive answer, I suppose that's because there isn't one since it's all relative.

I'm tinkering with seo for a site for a local business. When purchasing traffic I notice that a lot of places
offer large amounts of traffic and don't drip-feed small amounts.

Could it have a negative impact on a small site to go from around 100 visits a day to 500 or 1000?

In general what could constitute as too much traffic and raise a red flag?
I'm also assuming that a big decrease in traffic can be just as bad if not worse.

Again, I realize that there are no definite rules for SEO, but I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts on traffic.

It's not about quantity but quality of traffic ;) Check that first before moving forward with anyone. ;)

I fail to see how too much traffic will be bad for your website? Sites go vital on social media all the time and I doubt they take a hit for it.
 
If the traffic is real and not crappy bot traffic you should be fine.
 
paid traffic is fine if its legit targeted traffic, only worries would be having a high bounce rate.
 
Unless it's spam traffic it;s fine. The only time the answer becomes relative is when this is the case otherwise it's good.
 
Fake traffic is a waste of money, bandwidth and trees.
 
Paid traffic will be okay for you if it's good quality. If it's a bad traffic (with high bounce rate) you will have problems. So I suggest you to analyze a traffic that you buy.

Totally agree and the cheaper the traffic(source) is, the lousier the traffic. Pay peanuts, get monkeys ;)
 
When ordering traffic you have to decide on quality rather than quantity. The traffic should be of low bounce rate and also only organic one. Also it will be better if the traffic is geo-targeted and related.
 
If that traffic is from some bot then it can be harmful for your site second thing if your paid traffic has high bounce rate then it is not good for your site.
 
Having a lot of paid traffic will hurt your rankings yes. Many seem to think that having a lot of traffic is key however it's more of the quality of the traffic rather than the quantity. I wouldn't not buy traffic but I would definitely limit how much. In most cases it's better to gain genuine traffic yourself to prevent any problems.
 
have you ever tried investing in CPM traffic? it's good for brand exposure. You can explore Bluagile's platform and purchase traffic from them

Passing from around 100 visits a day to 500 or 1000 won't happen in one day even if you invest one million dollars in SEO. Google Bots need time to index (crawl) new website (also new links from actual websites). Here's a quote from Google Webmaster Central Help Forum :

Furthermore, if you have that huge increase of traffic suddenly your web hosting plan might be outdated pretty fast (you'll need more server capacity).

Paid traffic is the same (or should look the same as normal traffic). Shouldn't hurt you as long as you are getting screwed anyways.

Depends on the SEO.
 
paid traffic cannot bring negative results to your website especially if it is legit and of most importance, it is not the amount of traffic that matters but the quality. The only problem that you would have on your website is overloading the site which might cause its response to be slow. but this also will depend on the quality of the site.
