Title is important when it comes to ranking, description is more like a CTR factor.

only 2 sites ranking top 10 have the keyword in title

It is not mandatory to have the keyword in title in order to rank on the top. A strong authority website doesn't really need that especially if the competition is not that tough, however a new website lacking in authority could definitely use it.

Google takes a snippet on the page that is more relevant to the search query. You can still use meta descriptions, I would advice you to make them more relative to the content and do not forget to add the tags as well. If the meta description is not relevant or spammed through out every page, the crawlers are more likely not going to include it in the snippet. The goal of the snippet and title is to get the best description for each result and explain how it relates to the user's query.
