Is this what they call the google dance?

Im totally baffled by my google SERP. A week or so ago I was position 33 for my keyword. Then the next day suddenly 44, then back to the 30's for a few days, the I went to 71, then back up to 34 for a day, and today Im at 85!!! Arghhhhhh

Does anyone know whay this might be happening?

I am currently having something similar going on with one of my sites, my understanding is that Google is trying to determine the best position for your site, it is discovering new links and weighing them up to see whereabouts you should be, your best bet it to just keep on building links steadily.

Im going away for 2 weeks soon, so I'll be interested to see where I'm at when I return!

update and content creation is the key to be in good shape in serp. lots of websites must be targeting same keyword when your activity was dormant. This happens.

Google's been doing that a lot lately and if you have a site you're hitting pretty regularly with links that usually gets them trying to place it right.

Sometimes it's just for a day and then your site might disappear off any searches for a couple days and so forth. Just keep on building your links and doing as usual since that also shows Google your links are 'natural' and doesn't put up a red flag.

Most people stop doing everything immediately which only makes the site look suspect.

as said i have followed the same trend with one of my sites.

200 - 53rd - 1st - 56th - no ranking last 3 days

but is still indexed so hasn't been de indexed it getting kinda annoying as its a low competition term to and that 1st place

OH and this is happening accross about 10 of my sites the interesting thing is each one for the term ive targetted are guaranteed top 20 in bing/yahoo within 2 weeks most of my terms are first in yahoo but still doing nothing yet in google.

Maybe its a sign google care to much about there algorithm and backlink hiding that there results are a load of tosh

yeah that damn thing is happening with me also..three days back my keyword was 13 and now 100+..keep this thing in mind that i am doing the same intensity of work on my k/w...

MY site went 52 then 15 then back up to 22 ,now top at n0.1 for, auto classified ads,all in 6 wks.but ive got the feeling its going to bounce and dance over the next few weeks, i have seen a few of my other sites do the same old google dance over the years also,what always seems strange is when the sites just vanish for a couple of days and then reappear again
