Just started my first niche website, just registered the domain today,

I was wondering if i should get backlinks for my main page or blast my url to bookmarking sites then blast those with backlinks?

Sorry very new to web seo stuff just looking to get pointed in the right direction.

Also should i try to get some gov/edu to it as well? to help rank higher?

Well I would not be "blasting" at this point but you do need to build some links. The first thing you need is some content, then you can build yourself some links.

Generally I would say start out a bit slower for the first couple of weeks and then increase your link building each week up to your weekly max.
 
Day 1: Setup your site first.
Day 2-5:Build content
Day 4-10:Bookmark it

Dont blast it directly if it is a new site.. I dont know if you have aged domain..
 
no new domain like a few days old
 
Do some articles first, try to act natural the first few weeks out of the box especially if you're selling or doing something of questionable value. It's content, links and authority that Googliath is looking for.

What tools do you own already?

Nothing wrong with BMD but not what I would recommend as your first piece of software. I usually recommend scrapebox as the first one to get. It can do a lot more then just make blog comments and it is a very good tool to have if you are even halfway serious about building links.
 
yes i have scrapebox, scrapeboard, yahoo answer post software
