Making free wordpress blogs with keywords like buyfreeonlineviagra.wordpress.com (just an example) and then writing an article with anchor to ur main site, does this even give any power at all or is the game atm on PBNs?

People still do it. See it just as a self hosted website, to get any juice from it to your moneysite it needs, age, links and content.

It's a great idea, but as said above, it needs back linking as well, otherwise it would have very little power.
Really the good thing is to make it high quality, build back links to it, then you have a nice high quality buffer between your site and your tier 2 links.

It still works, but it has little effect. You should link it to other sites as well. Maybe several .wordpress blogs linked together and then to a secondary website which only then is linked to your main site...
