Is this much "wait" time normal?

My site has been feeling very slow of late, and I decided to test its speed using pingdom. What I've noticed anecdotally is that there is a lot of time where my browser is simply waiting for my site to respond, and not actually loading anything. That seems to be confirmed by pingdom's tests, which show 77.4% of my load time being taken up by a "wait" state, as opposed to 10.4% in "receive".

Is this normal? How do I improve this? Thanks.

Seems to me like you are having scripts problems. Do you use any cache plugins? Assuming its a WP site.

Yeah I use W3TC for caching. I'll try disabling it for a minute and seeing if that helps. I know Wordfence also has a caching option, but I have it turned off currently.

EDIT: So disabling W3TC brought up a whole bunch of errors, so I think that's a sign it was having some issues that it just wasn't reporting. I also mucked around with some things on Cloudflare, which seems to have helped as well. It's still not as snappy as I'd ideally like, but it's a starting point.

It can either be a slow server issue, or actual slow content.

I like to use pingdom and Google's page speed tool in conjunction with each other, because then you can see exactly what is slowing your site down. Feel free to PM me your URL and I'll see if I can give you any more specific advice.

Try to disable all the plugins and see whats going on. Usually they inject a lot of javascript code into the page.

When I had this problem, it was coz of my hosting server provider.

So what happens when you use Wordfence caching. Any difference?

I tried it once in the distant past, and it seemed to break my theme. I actually use it on some of my PBN sites and it seems to work well, just not in this particular scenario.

Thanks. Treeofl1 actually gave me some great tips via PM, so I'm going to work on those first. I actually sorted out the issues with W3TC to a degree by switching off some features. There are some plugins he recommended that seem like they'll do the same tasks better. Once I've got that all sorted out, I'll install GTMetrix and see what further I can do.

Thanks for all the help guys!
