Is it illegal in any way to do SEO for a brand name, ex. "AXE deodorant", are there any legal implications in trying to rank for that?

Well then they would have to C&D the 2.4 million pages coming up for "AXE deodorant."
My point exactly. 99% of the time they won't I was just saying in the off chance they get mad or w.e. at his site, the worst they can do is make him take it down.

Nah.
If he had their trademark in his domain name they could get that (had it happen to me before using the word YouTube in my domain a few years back) but I don't see a scenario where having a page which has the topic of a product is in any way illegal or infringing and could be grounds for a C&D.
