Is This Illegal?

Hello folks,

i'd like to know your opinion about this:
"is it illegal to register domains with names of movie in them?"

for instance, watchironman2online.com or avatarmovie.org

what do you guys think about it?

anyone want to share their experience?

nope its not illegal aslong as you dont put the film on there obviously.

because one of my friends had something like harrypotter6.com and warner brothers just emailed him and demanded they let them buy the domain but he didnt have to sell it to them.

how much did they offer him for it?

Umm yea... You think you can own microsoft.de or microsoftmovies.com? If they've trademark the term/phrase/word they can sue you or simply make a report to ICANN. They'll get the domain either way.

In your case iron man is trademark of marvel so is ironman and so is avatar (movies - games - comics)...

It can be a violation of copyrights. If the domain name contains a trademark name then they have the rights over the domain. I once had a domain with a trademark name and the trademark owners filed a domain dispute... which I didn't end up fighting, so they ended up getting the domain.

It is a violation of copywrite laws in the US, I do not know about any other countries. I had a domain name with the name of a huge company in it and had to give it to them.

It only earned about 600.00 a month so it was no great loss.

Usually if you are a little guy (as compared to the big boys), they won't bother you, unless you are getting a lot of attention and/or making a lot of money. Also, it helps if you put a disclaimer somewhere on the page stating that you are not associated with [company name].

Movie titles/TV titles would be very difficult for them to protect, especially when combined with other words to create a domain name. Just type "CSI" in Google. There are tons of sites using CSI in their domain names, yet have no real association with the TV show.
