If I was to say, go to ahrefs and look up my competitors backlinks for a keyword, and go to those sites and build my own backlink. If I did that for lets say all of my backlinks, would this help my money site or hurt it?

You know the answer is logically both.

Look at your competitors' backlinks, find the ones that will help you, and post to those.

Hopefully, the work you're doing on your site is so good that you have backlinks your competitor could not possibly emulate directly.

if you manually built those links with unique articles, absolutely you'll help your site. your competitor probably used bots and low quality content. it's a lot of work.

www.majesticseo.com is probably better to find the backlinks. Also, you can use scrapebox to find competitors backlinks as well.

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah I am sticking to White Hat SEO for now, but I was just curious about this. also, how can I tell whether it was a HQ backlink the guy built? with ahrefs

Go for white hat techniques you will definitely get good and quality backlinks for your site. Use unique content for articles.

Ya white hat SEO is the best way to beat your competitor..

Get more back links from high quality sites.

SEO is so much more than backlinks. SEO consists of on-page optimization and off-page optimization.

You're talking about a backlinking technique, which is part of off-page SEO. I love checking the backlinks of competitors, it's a very easy way to build your backlinks. However, check the quality of those links! If you and your competitor have websites about guitars, and most of your backlinks are from sites talking about the weather, Google may punish you and your competitor eventually. Sure, you may rank well...but that ranking may only be temporary. Build relevant, high quality backlinks.

I personally do 14 backlinks a week, or 2/day. Very simple, and very natural.

It's like bodybuilding. You're obviously a skinny guy who just got into the field while your competitor is already all buffed up. You looked into his routine, daily exercises and daily meals. Now you have all the information needed. You choose what is best for you and what is right for your body. The same thing goes to your website. You can't just follow all his SEO tactics. There are some links that could hurt your site badly just like bench pressing 100lbs with your skinny hands, which can be good for him. Just a point of view from bodybuilding. :D

I think you should be follow better SEO technique. somes are forum posting, article submission, directory submission, social bookmarking and facebook, twitter etc. automatically enhances proper backlinks.

.......it's a start. But also realize that many many times when you use this technique the links your competitor has will no longer be available due to comments being closed, no more accounts being made, etc.
