Will Google consider it duplicate content if you make each variation of a product page a different URL. For instance www.test.com/shop/productname and if you click on detailed specs www.test.com/shop/productname/details then? Both pages would be having the same buy button, images, product description above but would have a different bottom half.

    Is this ok?

Yes is it dupe content. If you really wanted to have this page for the benefit of the user you would need to nofollow the link to the dupe details and probably have a noindex on it also. This way your real product pages would stay in the serps and these will be for user benefit only.

Bottom would have dupe content so only 50% is dupe content but I doubt it will have negativ effect.

Neal sent me here to help you.

If you're using the same Google that we're using, don't worry about it. You could try a different career, or ranking in Yahoo and Bing is a more secure option.

I was thinking that it might get considered duplicate, but that sucks because what's on the bottom half has been on-site keyword rich content that I'd have loved to use to rank each sub-page for a slightly different niche within the main keyword. How do large corporate sites that I see avoid this problem? Are they going around no-indexing 3/4 of their pages??? Seems crazy.

canonical URLs might be an option here. And even that after second thoughts, to rank on slightly different keywords it wouldn't be efficient.

And yes it is definitly duplicated content, exactly the kind of practices which were targetted in the very first version of Panda.

To answer your question on big corporation. If you look closely, you don't find much of those kind of pages in serps anymore, not as much as you used too.

That said, have a look at freelancer.com which is doing something similar on most of the technical queries you type (it is one of the most annoying result ever if you ask me).

[EDIT] Btw, i meet this problem once and the solution i didn't dare to put in motion because of its dirty side and lack of return on it, is to used a different charset for caracters like seo20's spinning tools. So you'll have an unique page for each keyword content wise. However, how efficient could it be ? Using this method on a money site is quite risky, if you ask me.
