I wanted to register the domain Dante.me for a personal website, to host scripts, program downloads, and basically for web dev testing. It is already taken, and is on a GoDaddy landing page, meaning it isn't used. I contacted the guy who owns it based off the who is report, and he asked me what I thought it was worth, he hasn't done a thing with it yet. A me domain on GoDaddy is 10 for a year, but it used to be 20 for a year, It was registered in 2011, and expires on the same date in 2013, so I figure he paid about 40 bucks for it, I offered 60 to 80 dollars for the domain, he is asking $1200 for it, is that ridiculous? Or is it really worth that, he said it is original, simple, and based off the name of a famous person. I say it isn't worth that much because it literally hasn't had, and still has nothing on it, I'm paying for the name only. Should I try to lower it down? Or is it really worth that much? If you guys think it is, I'm gonna forget it because I would never pay that much for a domain name.

It sounds like he is not willing to go down to a price that you are willing to pay. Just pick another name and don't waste your time!

save yourself some time and just pick another domain. sure, a catchy domain can be great for business, but if it's personal use, then forget it.

Yeah, he parked it thinking he's got a gold mine and now a bite. Take a pass and use a slight alteration.

There are a lot of ppl that get a bunch of domains to resell... so he is trying to get a profit. It is only worth what people are willing to pay. Like others said if this is just for testing then it doesn't really matter what the domain name is, right? Move on.

not worth!
In these case you have 2 option:
1) wait the expire... from what you said... the owner is not professionaly... he asked you a price and after said the 1200$ So he knows nothing about a value of a domain.
2) Buy another domain, and if you want piss off the owner say him this: "I will wait the expire date"... before expire the owner renew it and lose some money :) after the renew ask him the same price you offered and wait ... if not accept (in these case the owner is in tilt :) ) say him: "ok I will wait another year"..... and repeat... after that the owner undurstand the value of a domain :)

I lol'd hard at this reply. :D

OP, Just get another domain and save your time.

This. There's probaly some rich guy named Dante out there that will pay it and doesn't care about the ludicrous price.

But you know what? Keep checking it and keep offering money if you really want it - the guy can only change his mind right.

He said he wasn't going to do anything with it, hopefully he gets no offers and sells it to me for my asking price, or I'll just wait until expiration. $1200 is absurd.

I had a similar situation where someone wanted to sell me a certain domain for $10,000

It wasn't worth that at all - so I just registered and ranked one with a different extension.

A domain (particularly of that nature) is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it. Personally, I'd give it a miss. Dude sounds like a jerk and you can do better.

Honestly, Dante was a big personality and Dante.com can easily be worth $xxxx. However, Dante.me for that price is a bit steep. But then, he only needs one buyer and if he is willing to wait then it is his call.

But sub $100 is way too less for it. You can try to offer to the tune of $300-500 and see if he changes his mind.

So you want to pay hundreds of dollars on domain for a test server with a .me extension? you must be loaded

if your going to pay $1200 then you would be better spending it on the .com ... .me isn't worth that

the guy is just dreaming of getting this amount or pushing his luck... offer him a final offer and if not go for another domain and let the guy hold on to it.

I have sat on domains for years, and eventually made a profit on some of them, enough to make it more than worth my time. Some will never hit, but some do. The price may seem high to you, but someone with a need could come along and pay what he wants, or at least more than you are willing to pay. It is just the way the game is played.

Figure out a price you think is worth it. Email him back and give him a firm price that you will not budge from and say take it or leave it. You have nothing to lose. It's not worth $1200, but is definitely worth more than your initial offer. If he denies your final price, find another domain.
