The company I work for had 3 pages created by an SEO expert, all 3 are the top performing pages of the website (based on organic traffic + organic keywords in #1).

Each page has:

1. No backlinks. (well to be precise, I saw 1 No-follow backlink from ispionage, according to Ahrefs)
2. Link score is 1 (in Screaming Frog),
3. Article lengths are around 700 words,
4. KD is easy (healthcare / insurance related terms)
5. One share on Twitter (according to Ahrefs)
6. No real on-page SEO that I can see (images are still named unsplash...)

How did he accomplish this?

Could it be so simple as the site sucks, this was well written content for a keyword easy term?

no black magic, just links hidden from web crawlers

It also depends on what the keyword he's ranking for is too.

Also, those backlinks could have been created in a time frame that those backlink checkers aren't registering yet.

Im sure they have PBN which is blocks all website tracker like ahrefs, majestic, moz, etc.

i think it's hidden links it's one of the oldest tricks in the SEO it has several forms: hidden text that also happens to be hyperlinked , Now there’s nothing bad about changing the style of a link to some degree

i am guessing longtail easy keywords

tell us 1 keyword format .

is it long .
is it more then 1 word.

go on kwfinder tell us the kw dificult score .

so it was normal longtail words?

use semrush soon find the backlinks that makes them so strong . or ahreff

Yes, It was "insurance provider" + "medication", KD "easy" in Ahrefs... w/ a PBN back-linking it.

More I learn about SEO, more I see it's pretty straightforward.
