Hey BHW,

I noticed recently that some of my keywords has dropped from page 1-2 to position 300-400. This happened overnight. I also see that some competitors have received the same penalty.

I have several pages on the same subject and can see that all dropped within a specific keyword.

For example (with the same website):

Keyword dropped: "diet pill for men"
Keyword that nothing has happened with: "weight loss for men"

So I can see that all the keywords (including long tail) containing "diet pills" has dropped to approximately the same positions. But my top positions on, for example, "weight loss for men" are left on good positions with the same website. So no entire websites have been penalized, only certain keywords.

I do not use Webmaster Tools (on purpose) so I can not check for any notification from Google.

What do you think happened?

Did you change the content of your website ? (maybe you removed some content with "diet pill for men" keywords ?)

No change at all. And i can see that we are about 10 websites (not all are my sites) from page 1-5 that have dropped at the same time.

Could it be that Google made a clearing on this specific keyword but without penalizing the entire pages or other keywords? Just one thought. It's a spammy niche.

They did give manual penalty to the keyword diet pill for some site's, change your pages with the keyword diet pill to weight loss for men and for sure the pages will go up and then you have your proof.

Nice, will give it a try. Thank you!

I sure will. I'm also checking my competitors daily to see how they do after this penalty.

Will update here!

Quick update. Did som on-page optimization yesterday on one website. The only thing i did was turned down the keyword density on the keyword that are penalized.

And now the penalized keyword ranking again:

I do not jump for joy yet but still interesting to keep track of SERP after each change i do.

Note that the other websites i have still ranking bad (have not worked with them yet). Also my competitors still rank bad. That make me think this is not a Google Dance. What do you think?

check your anchor density. perhaps you have just a little bit over optimized it...try to dilute it with more generic anchor might help...

Give it some time to see if you regain your rankings without doing anything. It happens sometimes, but if nothing happens after several days, you may want to start making appropriate changes. One site at a time to see what happens.

I do not use Webmaster Tools (on purpose), may I ask why?

Thank you all for your answers. Right now i'm going trough my optimization and backlink anchors (thanks Biznik and kohwai). Nothing changed yet but i will keep study a little bit at a time to see what happens.

I understand what TZ2011 wrote. But I have initially chosen to leave some of my sites outside of Google's tools. More a principle thing. :)

Update like a promised. I been working with on page SEO and done more good backlink work with anchor diversity.

I have got back some positions but not like before the penalty. I can see that my competition also struggle coming back but without success. I also trying building a new site and being more careful about my backlinks work with the new page, and the new page now rank better then my old site. So maybe i just trough the old site in the trash and go on with the new, more careful, page. Thanks again all for your inputs! :)
