Im a buyer of sponsored links from websites, and this is how I evaluate a links quality. What do you all think?

- We search for another outgoing link on the prospective sites homepage
- Find out the ahrefs global ranking, and determine if theirs is similar to ours
- If its similar, or even if its not, we then look at where it lands in the other sites top 100 links

If it ranks very high in a site that is superior to mine, we defintely make an attempt to buy the link
If it ranks low, we usually pass - especially if the other site that is getting the prospective link is lower than us

Am I possibly missing opportunities with this method? any thoughts or changes?

Thank you

You should be considering overall site OBL as well as its traditional metrics (trust flow, etc, etc, etc).

Thank you for pointing that out.

I'd also analyze the top links of the domain, and the anchors used by the other sites being linked to. If there's anything fishy, you'll notice is right away from the anchors.

Check the TF/CF for the domain, check the deep level of the page that your backlink will be on, check how many outbound links on the page as well as the home page.

Your method works. The problem is you can't assert, for certain, whether the current site is the one responsible for that other link ranking. But it may present you with another data point to judge the prospective site.
