Well, if you do it just once i think thats fine as it may be natural someone to link to your main domain and a subdomain which may be some product and etc..

however if that same PR4 site links to many domains along with subdomains on those domains that will definitely not be good

Yeah, linking to one is fine but more than one reveals way too many outbound links.

There's no reason to worry about.

The point is that a search engine considers a subdomain to be a different entity from the root domain. So if some high-PR domain links to both your domain and subdomain, it's totally fine.
