Well I doubt it could be a penalty. All I did was build 3 web 2.0s with 5 unique articles each.

but for one page I'm ranking for, I've been on page 2 for the past few months. Today I find myself at #260.

what the hell is this shit

That's really strange, have you done any kind of black hat seo or just what you mentioned in your original post? Hopefully you will come back again.
 
it can't be a penalty from 3 web 2.0 ... especially if the are done nice with 5 unique articles.
 
you can test this easily by removing your link from those web 2.0 but as the others have said, 3 new web 2.0 is nothing, they're probably not even indexed yet
 
From page 2 to page 26 is most probably a penalty. I suggest you let the dust settle down first.
 
I doubt that amount of links would occur a penalty. Sounds like something else may have occurred.
 
#10 in yahoo. This is weird.
The only other links pointing to it are signature forum links.

I'll try removing the web 2 links and see if it makes a difference
 
It's not so "easy" to get such a large penalty via web 2.0

I'm going to say dance. I have a couple of keywords that were doing this recently. One day it will be on page 2...the next it will be 200+. They would continue to bounce every couple of days. After about a week or two, they ended up settling down at the top of page 2. So I wouldn't worry at this point, it sounds like my scenario.

Gives me a bit of hope. At least yours was bouncing. Mine has been on 200+ for a few days now without movement.
 
Mine just got hit today, from page one to page 8 almost 21 keywords went below 100 from page 1 :(

Nope.

Will I still be able to rank for the same keyword if I make a new article on it and make that rank or does the penalty (if it's a penalty) stick on the site?
 
3 web 2.0 and 5 article links shouldnt hurt your site the best thing is to wait for some and see if you regain your rankings if not i would suggest to remove all 8 links if you are still not at page 2 then it something else

Did you check your index status, maybe Google deindex your ranking articles, if this isn't the case, you are not penalized.
BTW check if your competition did any negative SEO on your site.
