Is there really a penalty for duplicate content?

Let's say I have 2 sites. I publish unique content on one site and cross post it to another. Will SEO rankings be affected for either of those sites? My research said that as long as you do rel=canonical then it doesn't matter, even if you don't google no longer penalizes for duplicate content. What do you guys think?

Your research is right. Unless the machines or a human determine your gaming the system your fine.

Thanks for that. I had read most of that thread but had not seen the end of it which was helpful.
 
Google loves different type of contents but at the same time not hates duplicate content
 
don’t publish duplicated content if you love your website and want to earn from it :)
 
Google has said several times they don't penalise websites for duplicate content if it's not spammy :-)

They just won't rank it very high.

I have a website that is 90% machine generated content but it's helpful to the user so hasn't been penalised (yet haha) after 2 years.
 
One of my pbns had spun content on it and it got penalised. I have another local silo website which uses duplicate content and it's ranking for most terms by using only silo internal linking and duplicate content. So I don't know what Google is doing except drive me crazy...... But I guess the pbn could get penalized for a number of things not just spun content as it also looked spammy however the local site which uses duplicate content is actually useful to the users and it's not getting penalized

1. Parse full site of your competitor
2. Buy older domain
3. Rank your site a little
4. Send an abuse to DMCA, telling that your site is older, your competitor stole your content
...

This is an interesting topic.

I have two websites in the same niche, going after the exact same keywords. Now, I accidentally used the same content on both sites. One of them ranked around #17 with no link building. The other site (created after) ranked something like #48 with duplicate content from the first site. So, it ranked, and even had some minimal unique visitors from Google, but nothing major.

Over a year later I noticed my mistake and deleted the content completely from site #2, just kept the page with almost zero content. The page dropped like a rock, not found in top 100. So, that means duplicate content was better than nothing at all.

I later added unique content and went to #17 within a week or two (where site 1 ranked before, lol).

So, what happened was:
  • Duplicate content: #48
  • Removed duplicate content: not found in top 100
  • Added unique content: #17
If I was trying to rank, then duplicate content would be better than nothing at all. But unique is the best.
 
No penalty for duplicate content, My one site with scraped content is just doing fine. But it also depend on niche too.
 
If your website is more usable and makes additional value for visitors then it can work.

Google has historic index. They consider the first one they crawled, not the domain age.
 
Obviously the duplicated content is penalized but not always in the way you might think
