Ok, so I have this site that apparently is like honey to Winnie the Pooh to spammers and I'm literally SICK of getting spun comments that are just trying to build back links using my website.

I've tried it all, my site is PR 5 and I only approve comments when I read they provide some sort of value and even then I sometimes edit their URL ha, but anyway just today I've received about 500 comments on different pages of my site from what I'm guessing is people Scrapeboxing it.

I've already tried making it nofollow but that doesn't seem to stop them. I know I could disable comments but I don't want to stop normal users from commenting and I have no problem giving them a backlink back if I know they're real visitors.

God Bless

If is wordpress install Akismet
Also remove footprints
Also find or make a plugin that requires JavaScript to post a comment, or add a captcha, or hijack the comment form and change the field names to something else.

As above, recaptcha will stop most other than xrumer, but at pr5 its worth paying a captcha service provider for any platform to spam you. That should bring it way down though.

Oh shit here is a tip, start using "stopforumspam" alot of guys use it as a blacklist for xrumer.

The anti-spam plugin that works best for me is block spam by math. The other thing that you should do is make sure your htaccess file is blocking known bad spiders, robots and those who try to access your comments page directly.

I would us a custom CAPTCHA. One that generates a random letter in red or another colour and ensure that the comment submission process informs the user to input the captcha WITHOUT the red letter etc.

Most captchas make the captcha greyscale to help solve it so this process kills spam by a massive amount.

Another method, simply remove the ability to put someone's website in the comments.

Why don't you add the comment moderation ? I think its th best way to protect the spamming.

I had the same issues with spammers. In Wordpress I install plugin:
Fast Secure Contact Form and from then I have peace like in heaven.

You can add drag and drop (puzzle) captcha, I don't think any bot can bypass it right now....

Just re-arrange your comment form so scrapebox and xrumer don't recognize the fields, simple.

yes i have installed akismet it stops more than 300-400 comments i receive in a week people no their comments won't be approved also recaptcha is enabled on my blog

stop publishing links in comments, or akismet + custom fields in comment form to stop automated tools from posting.

Download a plugin called Animal Captcha. Your spam comments will go from hundreds to zero overnight.

Awesome everyone gave me amazing advice, thank you so much y'all.

There's also another captcha plugin that shows a pic of an animal and you have to enter the name of it.

why not try to use facebook comment plugin..so your user need to login their facebook and make a comment in your blog..plus this will add more value in social community such more viral etc.
