Is there any SEO value in using scribd?

No SEO value in links documents you upload to scribd.
You can check it by "View source" in your browser.
Scribd shows one thing to search engines and another thing to the user.

Yep all the stuff that renders the PDFs in your browser is done in javascript, so it doesn't theoretically show up to SE bots.
However, PDFs that you upload will sometimes still be spidered and indexed, and you can put links into your PDFs (which are hosted by an authority site like scribd). So there is some small SEO value.

They don't cloak as such, ie. bots and real browsers get exactly the same code. It's just that the code that renders most of the page is in javascript, so it looks ok in your browser, but a SE bot doesn't parse most of it (including the links). At least that's how scribd worked last time I checked.

The issue is that these sites convert your documents to flash or other method... so actually the pages are not the original documents and therefore in most of them you don't get the SEO benefit.

We have used this method of using Scribd in the past. A long time ago, back when Stompernet was good, they told us about this source for traffic. It was well described in getting in there for Traffic, not SEO.
So to officially answer the question, you aren't getting any linkjuice as your links are not detected in the same way as other links.
But if you write about a good topic and put it there, it can be a good source of traffic to your site. Which in the end is what we all want anyhow.
So if you are on the fence. I would suggest, taking articles that you have spun and placing on in there, just make sure it is a good spin. When things are in PDF's they seem to have a little bit more cred, than some crappy content sharing site.
