There are lots of free tools out there, but a lot of the really are just rehashed versions or derivative versions of Google Keyword Planner.

Why go through the middle man if you can go ahead and go straight to the source and save time.

Having said that, if I were you, I would look beyond Google Keyword Planner.

There are two very powerful keyword discovery tools that most people usually don't think of when it comes to keyword research.

I am of course talking about Reddit and believe it or not... Wikipedia.

The reason why I recommend these websites' categorization system, is because they use a crowdsourcing framework.

When people create content on these websites, they collaborate with each other regarding agreed standards as to how to categorize or sub-categorize information.

Usually, the people who do this, who invest their time and energy to this, are quite familiar with their niches.

They may not be SEO specialists, but they definitely know enough about their particular niche or industry to want to categorize things a certain way.

This is a gold mine for keyword research because in many cases a lot of the sub-category words or terminology that they use, aren't picked up by Google Keyword Planner.

However, the traffic for those sub-categorizations or related keywords exist.

The problem with Google Keyword Planner is when you use it, it only spits out keywords that are very closely related to the target word that you entered in the first place.

It doesn't use thematic similarities.

It just uses a very simple algorithm that looks at whether a particular word or word fragment is used by another word.

In other words, it can be quite useless.

Why?

Whatever keywords you get from Google Keyword Planner are going to be targeted by your competitors as well..

So, I hope you can see why this can be a headache.
