Is there a way to hide backlinks from competition?

Why is that a downside? Who cares about majestic? Do you think Google gives a fuck about TF?

These are companies trying to work out what google do, Google don't have moz/ahrefs/majestic metrics as a ranking factor.

I'm surprised at how seriously folks take Moz and whatever, thinking Google uses those services in any way. Shows the backlink checkers have done great marketing, but also proves there's a lot of ignorance in the SEO arena.

There will always be a lot of ignorance in just about anything and SEO is no exception. There's a reason gurus exist and make money and that's because of ignorant people!

The way I see it, you want to block your competition from finding your PBN's but by doing so you're risking Google noticing a footprint from your PBN's because you're blocking the other bots. If my PBN was a legitimate site, not a PBN, why would I block the bots? Or at least I guess that's the theory here. Who knows, I'm an SEO noob.

Why you want to hide your backlinks. Simply build such links which cannot be replicated.

Why would google give 2 shits if you decided to block SEO tools from seeing content?

They don't. They care about finding spam blogs. Blocking/cloaking an SEO tool is a signal that you're a spam blog. It's not something regular webmasters do but it's something spam bloggers do all the time.

If WordPress and all the other common installs blocked SEO tools by default, it would be another story. Blocking an SEO tool would be the norm. Right now, it's not.

Jesus fucking Christ my nigga.

Google isn't fucking hacking your site and looking at the server side code to see if you are cloaking other sites, and even if they did know, they wouldn't give a flying fuck. They only care and notice (sometimes) if you cloak them. And even then they only get pissed if it's to manipulate ranking or fuck with adsense.

The robots.txt shit you quoted isn't even relevant, all they're saying is if you want to block a bitch ass bot don't rely on robots.txt to do it since it can be ignored, rely on another method to identify and block the bot.

EDIT: I feel like you have never cloaked anything in your life and need to get back to basics to get oriented.

You're talking like someone who thinks Google only knows the basics. You think Google doesn't "give a flying fuck" about identifying the things unique to spam blogs? Please. They have whole teams of people who do just that.

Google doesn't give a shit about blocking Moz or Ahrefs or anybody else, but they care very much about identifying spam because anyone who ranks through spam is someone who isn't buying AdWords. Do you think they haven't noticed that every last black hat asshole has said PBNs are the way to keep ranking after Penguin? They haven't noticed that every domain with a decent backlink profile gets scooped up quickly? They finished the whole disavow -> machine learning -> Penguin 4.0 project and now they're on the hunt for new signals.

They don't need to hack your site. They just need to probe it enough to see an indication of cloaking.

Everything you do that's different from what a "legitimate" site would do is a potential flag for Google. When you're talking about cloaking, something that's also a red flag for malware, you might as well put up a sign asking Google to penalize you.

Clearly you still don't get the point or what's going on. Seriously re-read the thread and exercise some critical thinking.

Also, while we're on the topic, you DO realize white hat cloaking exists and even google does it, right? Probably not, lol. But I don't want to confuse you further than you already are.

Don't block, just present a different version to those you don't want to see the full page. It's called cloaking.

Thing is, who are we to know wether the bots from seo tools indentify themselves as such (eg: "ahrefsbot"), when they can identify themselves as a regular user (Mozila 5.0 *) or even worse, they may even identify themselves as nothing more and nothing less that "GoogleBot" itself. Why would a seo bot identify itself as a seo bot putting itself at risk of being blocked, when they can pass as a regular user or even as google in order to get as much data as possible for their clients?

maybe thats risky idea but if you spam some of your web20s their metrics can go up = they will show up first in ahrefs etc, cause biggest metrics. if you have 4k links for example they are sorted by DR or UR and then pbn will be in front. spammed webs can reach higher metrics

If your website uses WP, then download the "All in One SEO" plugin. They have a feature called "Block Bad Bots". You simply "activate" that feature, and they will block the majority of the tool crawlers out there. I do know that my own PBNs don't appear on Ahrefs or Majestic with this plugin.
