Am I tweaking or is there no way to filter out closed thread? Would be a great addition to the search function.

Is there a way to filter for only open thread?

Unfortunately not. And, since nobody else jumped in here, I don't think that this is a huge issue for the majority.
As always, I will keep this in mind when we're problem solving or talking about new features, but I think if you're searching for newer threads that aren't in this section, you're likely to not run into as many closed threads.
