I used backlinkwatch to see where the links coming to that particular website. Paid sites always give more results so go with them. There are still some websites offers for free in checking backlinks.

There are a whole lot of tools some cost and others are free but just as good. I tend to find that doing a quick search on Google helps me to bring up some great sites that give great results. One that I have used just recently is smallseotools.

Scrapeboxes free link checker works well if you are not willing to spend any money on something like this.

backlinkwatch is the one you need to start with..
If you have scrapebox , it has a free addon too.

SE Ranking is an all-in-one marketing tool with a good backlink monitoring tool.

usually I do that with on of the following tools

    Ahrefs (it's a bit expensive)
Link assistant (use the seo spyglass software which also has a free edition)
The Majestic SEO platform which is also used by marketsamurai. I use it through the MarketSamurai tool as it's free when you buy the software.

MajesticSEO for site and SEOQuake for plugins. These is what i use when i am investigating backlinks of competitors. Some are using SEO spyglass too.

Thing is you cannot copy all the backlinks of your competitors but you can duplicate every single available backlink of that top 1 site in your niche :)
