I am buying a domain name but the .com is already taken and I was interested in knowing whether there is a difference in ranking .com and .org domains and will it be harder to outrank the competitor for the same keyword if he has a .com

Hey there,

I've been reading around lately of the same thing and I think .com would probably rank easier due to it having a better reputation in Google's eyes.

But I also think .org would likely be ranked more if you have better content.

It doesn't matter much anyways

Bullshit , there's no difference . The only difference would be in your customers eyes.

There isn't a difference between .com and .org. Google has confirmed this in the past.

.com, .net, .org makes no difference, only country specific make a difference for local searches.

I'll tell you this honestly, most of my searches on Google brings up .com results on the first page except when there's no alternative. If your niche is totally unique and there's hardly a worthy competitor go for anything, or I would always suggest a .com.

Goodluck!

If a .net or .org is better optimized for the search term and has a better backlink profile, it will outrank a .com. I should know as I still do SEO for some regular clients.

The insight (.com is treated as a business and .org as the organization) between these two’s are a major difference. Other than this, the price is a small difference.

Domain extension doesn’t matter for SEO. Both the .com and .org gives you more trust.

They both will rank quickly and easily. As per my opinion, both (.com and .org) are best for quick ranking.

But, first pick always go for .com (good in terms of ranking and recognition) and second pick for .org (good in terms of trust and respect).

If you have a good website than your competitor, then you can easily outrank.

yea I think .com and .org don't make much of a difference in google's eyes.
BUUUUT, while SEO is of little influence here, I did find .coms have a naturally faster traffic growth rate from backlink traffic, and even generate organic backlinks earlier than other domain types.
I have credited this to the psychological human factors of recognition and trust and bla bla.

Plus, .org sounds like it's going to be a boring site,
and in the name of all that is good, stay away from .gurus ...lol

no different in serp, but for the long run and branding. better search another name with .com extention.

no difference. Both are global domains.
.org just to represent an organization.

ah that is an interesting perspective :) haha what experiences make you say that

Ain´t we all GURUS .. =) .. No one can join BHW without the feeling of being a highly profitable expert GURU in all aspects of business .. No newbies are joining this fine and established group .. or? .. so .guru for the people .. =)

No different between com and org, it's just a pure preference of your customers.

Each of these is what's called a Top Level Domain, or TLD. Domains ending with .COM are generally intended to be used for commercial businesses, which is why they're the most commonly seen domains in the United States.

.com, .net, .org makes no difference, only country specific make a difference for local searches.

Correct, below are some definitions for those extensions:
