There is nothing you specifically need to do; google places ranking is just like beating out another competitor :)
 
hm. you trying to create a directory or something? i think keyword in the domain name is important, if your not a authority site (yellowpages, superpages, etc)
 
you're better off getting to the top of the google places listings
 
Good luck. Spend your energy somewhere else. Google will not let you outrank them unless you an authority site for your niche.
 
Why not try to get 100 good long tail rather than 1 hard to rank keyword?
 
use negative tactics and positive tactics; aka say your comp is shit, and you a r god like
 
I consider myself a pretty good SEO/SEM person and I'm having a hell of a time getting a client ranked high on Google Places. It's a hard beast to crack... for me... anyways.
