Hey guys.
I need a tool that will allow me to check whether an image is stolen (i.e. has been posted somewhere online already).

Preferably something free, but if it's worth the $ that's fine too.

Search Google for the image? You can drag and drop it in the image bar or click the Search Google for image (or something like that) option when right click the image on Chrome

If you want to use an image that has been sent you and you aren't sure, then there are lots of things to make it unique.
The most simple (works if there is no text in the image) is reverse the image. But you can also crop it, change the colour density, add a watermark, overlay or other element.

Google is TERRIBLE at reading images. Better than it once was, but still awful. I've bought foto stock images before now that I think even they have stolen so I've altered them again.

You can try TinEye. But then again, just like what Scritty has said, just do something different with the image, so as not to get hits. Edit it, if you have the resources. It's not gonna take a long time to do so.
