Just as the title says - does the keyword in the url influence ranking anymore or is it all about the SEO and content these days? I know that a lot of folk click on the search result because they see the keyword in the URL but does it really help to rank with, say, big G?

The reason I ask is because I can have a decent sounding URL without the keyword (more a general name) or one with the keyword within it that does not read as eloquently.

What do you peeps think?

I think it marginally does. Not as much as years past but it has a small effect on relevance. If you can fit it in, without it totally sounding unnatural, do it

It's an easy way for google and users to tell what the page is about. I would definitely recommend it.

G doesn't like that. It used to be a common practice to stuff as many keywords into URL as possible. There was an algo update a few years back that targeted exactly this, so try to keep it short. Plus if you have, let's say URL like domain.tld/best-widgets/ as a category page and then 20 URLs with domain.tld/best-widgets/best-blue-widgets etc, then you have keywords spammed all over the place and that's pretty bad.

It matters a little bit. As far as having a decent sounding URL without the keyword (more a general name) or one with the keyword within it that does not read as eloquently, it really depends. I'd still default toward the more eloquent name personally.

Will help in some Geolocations, but generally, it counts for little these days cos Google can know what the page is all about using Latent Semantic Indexing with related keywords without even using the keyword that is in your URL. So if using a related keyword in the URL gives better user experience, use that instead.

Thanks all - it seems the consensus is that it helps slightly but it's not major as long as the url is relevant to the niche. So, for instance, if the niche is bikes then www.wondefulbikes.so is ok but so is www.cycleshopideas.so/bikes as the url is still relevant to the niche and subsequent pages/posts?

Optimising your slug (URL) with the keyword is an essential part of on-page optimisation, and it can positively affect your positions in the SERPs.

Yes, Keyword should be URL Friendly,
It helps google to crawl your page much faster....

Yes, It sounds good. If URL's come with the keywords because its easy for the google and users to find out what is the page about.

Take it from a user perspective, a clean looking URLs structure does improve user-experience.

Not many people use URL navigation, I tend to do that a lot if the site doesn't have a breadcrumb.

It helps a little but it will not effect if you are having steroid based backlinks for your website.

Yes, keyword in the URL will play an important role. It will be easy for bots to crawl. and show you relevant result.
