I am on "health" niche and thinking of submitting my website on paid directory. Is directories still a factor on ranking today?

some of the big legit directories still have juice, and some of the small local directories are good. Avoid all linkfarm directories.

The paid can be good if they are more than just link farms as leth said. Also look to get on the non-paid moderated ones though. The harder to get on the better they are, Moz of course still being the king.

the paid directory submission can still give your good results. Directory submissions still have their own value and did not loose their importance after google's recent updates. Still one can get quality backlinks from the directory submissions if the website is being submitted in high PR web directories

You should avoid linkfarms not only on directories but generally too on every type of backlink. Don't use huge directories btw, try something where google probably isn't hunting on
