is SEO effective on sub domain?

Its worth remembering that you cant sell a subdomain if you want to flip the site for extra $$$

Yes, it's effective.
I've seen a website with PR2 on its domain and PR6 on one of its sub domain. :D

They both have their usages. If you are talking about small websites then you loose all your hard work on your main domain.
However since panda if you are talking about content farms and want to use your subdomains as independent blogs (one in each subdomain) it maybe better! Take for example hubpages, since Panda hummered them they offered subdomains.
Why subdomains? Because subdomains are independent of the main webpages
What that means? Each hubber rather than posting on a new authorative directory which ranks relatively easily (up to the second page now but it used to be top positions) posts on his OWN subdomain which has almost NO link juice from the main site.
What is the benefit of that? When a hubber starts SEO on their content their subdomain gets link juice and that will post their articles to the first page (however its all their own work and there is no reason to use hubpages and not somewhere else).
So why are they not performing SEO in directories then? Performing SEO in directories is not ideal if Google penalizes the main page because is a content farm or whatever other reason
