Bro SEO 101 is to find a niche that isn't dominated by websites you can't outrank.
You don't have to rank for mega keywords to make good amounts of cash.
You can make quite a bit of dough ranking medium competition/volume keywords.
Edit: I mean dominated by websites you can't overtake with your SEO skill level. You need to adjust based on your skill level and resources available to you.

Well, you can certainly create a website in a competitive niche and make money with it if you have a good strategy and something unique to offer. In other words, as long as you aren't starting another generic weight loss website, you should be fine, although it will take longer, cost more, and be much harder to rank overall due to the competition.

SEO will die when they do away with search engines. Until then, it will continue to be an integral part of any online marketing campaign, including paid traffic. As with any kind of business, things change and you just adapt. That's what it takes to stay in business, the ability to adapt. For example, they may still make buggy whips but not near as many as they did in 1814 or even 1914. The 1814 SEO equivalent might be blasting away with tens of thousands of forum profile links. The 1914 equivalent might be blasting away with tens of thousands of article directories and wikis. The key is not so much finding what works in 2014 but also anticipating what will work in 2015, etc. Quit living in the past where that version of SEO is dead, work with the present SEO and look to the future of SEO.

Wikipedia, ehow et al do dominate some KWs but I kill them dead most of the time and all the time when I choose to go after a KW... and there are guys that make me look like I wet my pants that are light years better than I.
It is bad form to impose your failure thinking on others in the form of irresponsible name calling because your game is hopscotch and not ranking and banking.
