I was off SEO for quite some time and wonder what are the best tools now and how about SEnuke doing at the moment?

SEnuke is pretty much dead. I've seen many people complaining about their low success rate and the lack of updates for the developer. Just google for "Senuke Xcr dead" and you will find a lot of complains.

Hearing that name makes me flash back to 2010.

Things have changed in SEO, and they didn't make a ton of friends with their high pricing either. Left a bad taste in a lot of mouths.

Lots of software works very well.
GSA might be the best known - but there are several other great link making tool out there that offer a lot more control than GSA does.
GSA = Probably best value for simple link making though.

SENuke XCR or Xrumer or Scrapebox. They all are Tools, People still use it when needed or required.

AMR is another popular tool of that time that is completely dead now. Quite a few software fled the scene during the initial Panda/Penguin period.
