I have a friend who owns an offline stationery shop, and we are planning to sell on Amazon.in soon. I am not sure though if we'll be able to save any money after their commission considering most of these items would sell for less than 5 USD each. Anyone from India selling on Amazon can tell me if they have a good margin after the commission, shipping, packaging, and material costs?

Thanks

first you need to calculate total costs like its product cost, shipping cost, packaging cost and FBA 15 % cost for amazon. with that you can also check out other sellers selling costs. then you will get a better deciding idea either to go in it or not.

I'll provide the details with the math so that you can calculate. Their commission is different for every product type ranging from 5% to 25% in addition to a fixed price of Rs 10 to 40. On average, mostly 15-18% on the selling proce. But that's not all, you have to pay for the shipping from your end which will be around Rs. 82 if it is not a tiny item.

So, if a product price is 500 INR and you provide free shipping to the customer, this will be your cost:

Fee = 18% + 20 INR = 110 INR
Shipping= 84 INR
Total = 194 INR
Packaging =10 INR
Profit = 296 INR

Though you may get some sales, if you really want to succeed in Amazon and make a living out of it, you should put in some money in Amazon Ads. Add that to the cost of the product. If your advertising is well-targeted, it would cost you 10% of the selling price (Around 50 INR for Rs 500) or less.
And don't forget to calculate GST which you will have to pay to the govt.

Also, keep in mind that some of the orders will get returned or rejected at the time of delivery. If the product returned comes in a bad shape, you may claim some money from Amazon but not 100%. Something around 20 to 50%. They also have some limits on how many you can ask per month (Not sure).

Hope this helps. We learned these numbers when doing Ad campaigns for our clients on Amazon India.

PS: I also hope I'm not breaching any NDA from Amazon.

Certain niches (products) do sell well in Amazon India, such as beauty & cosmetics. However in my opinion, you (or your friend) may not see much of sales in stationery products. And, in India, mostly people buy online only if there is some considerable savings, discounts, etc.

It's not worth it for stuff like stationary unless you are producing the product yourself in bulk. If you are planning to just buy products from a distributor and resell it on Amazon.in, you won't break even. Primary reason being most of these manufacturers already have their products available on e commerce platforms.

This was very helpful, thank you.

I would not recommend selling on amazon India, unless you have a product that you own exclusive rights to distribute in India and you get to dictate the price point for India.

Don't even bother about selling products that cost less than 1500.

In the end if you're extremely lucky, you would barely make $100/month profit every $4-5k worth of sales. There are so many overheads, it's very unlikely you're going to make a profit at all in Amazon India.

Selling on Amazon India is one of the best ways to make money online today through ecommerce

Yes I'm a seller since 2.5yrs.

Grew business from 1L sales to 1.5cr+ arr.

One thing people get wrong (including me) is chasing the sales. we chased higher profits and higher quality products. If you have the right pricing all products are good. Feel free to dm incase of doubts :)
