Hello everyone,

Everyone talks about “only quality links” these days. But sometimes I wonder if it’s being used as an excuse to avoid outreach or scale campaigns.

Questions for the community:
  • Are we overcomplicating link building in 2026?
  • Do smaller, lower-DR but relevant links sometimes outperform “high-quality” links?
  • How do you define a truly quality link today?

I don’t think “quality links” is an excuse, but it’s often misunderstood. Smaller, relevant links with real traffic can absolutely outperform big DR links. Today, a quality link is one that fits the topic, looks natural, and actually gets crawled and trusted, not just one with high metrics.
 
I think quality links means niche relevant traffic sites link with good authority over that niche.
 
I've bought links from sellers promoting shitty PBNs as "quality links". I'd say a real quality link would be with proper outreach and articles on a reputable website in your field.

From my experience, “quality links” often gets reduced to DR, which misses the point. Relevance, placement, and context usually matter more than raw authority. Smaller, highly relevant links can outperform high-DR ones when they reinforce topical alignment instead of just adding generic authority.

I wouldn’t say link building is overcomplicated, but it’s often framed too narrowly. A quality link today is one that strengthens topical signals and makes sense within the content, not just one that looks strong in a tool.

To me, a quality link today is one that fits naturally into the topic and supports overall authority, not just a high metric.
 
Agreed. When a link reinforces the topic and fits naturally within the context, it tends to contribute to authority far more reliably than chasing metrics alone. That alignment usually holds up better over time as well.

I have posted about this again and a again, I've worked on the world's best seo teams and led them as PM in online casinos.

Link relevance wins every single time, DA and DR are bs terms peddled here way too much, this would take too long to dissect might do that later.

1 good link beats 1000 bad one any given day and thrice on a Sunday, as they say

in 2026, a quality link for me means:

– relevant to the niche
– contextual (inside content, not sidebar junk)
– from a page that actually gets traffic
– makes sense editorially

I’ve seen lower DR niche sites outperform high DR generic blogs, simply because the relevance + context was tight.

a DR80 lifestyle site linking to your plumbing site isn’t “quality” just because of the number.

are we overcomplicating it? maybe. but Google is clearly weighting relevance + trust more than raw metrics now.

I’d take 5 real niche links over 20 inflated DR guest posts any day.
