Is Panda Really About Content?

Simply because Google tells us that Panda is about quality content doesn't mean that it is.

The very fact that Google says it's about content makes me think that it might just be about something completely different such as back links, linking profiles link velocity and link diversity.

Back links are the main factor in ranking sites and always have been..

Thoughts anyone?

my competitor ranked one top 5 with one blog post... even without privacy or contact sites... btw the site is one of the biggest niches in my country. 70k exact match and 20 mio competition in quotes..

also there was a person that outranked a seo company in my contry with "google translator" translated content...

nothing more to say

I'll break it down real simple.

• Google is a company.
• A company needs to make money.
• Google makes their money from advertisers by displaying advertisements on search results or through AdSense on websites not owned or operated by Google.
• Users click on ads only if they are relevant to their interests.
• Content is what the user is going to interact with. They will not be interested in the fancy behind the scenes code, only the content of the site itself.
• Thus Google will want to return search querys with the most relevant results possible to the users needs.
• Next to this relevant information Google will also show relevant advertisements, and relevant sites will also possibly be using Google AdSense to give Google yet another chance to make money from advertisers.

Any reports of sites which gone lower in seprs with hand written content/quality content?

Yes, many.

Panda is trying to be about quality, but it is failing. They're on the right track with the machine learning algorithms but they are not there yet.

Instead of making things better, they're just changing things around. Some spam sites up, some spam sites down. Some quality sites up, some quality sites down. Overall the quality of the SERPs is not better.

My quality sites are down the drain. The ones I took hours to personally write articles.

On the other hands my MFA sites with crap content are doing fine.

Google makes money from adwords, so they want to make it super hard for people to do seo, so that people will turn to adwords instead.

An algorithm can't tell the difference between a $5 article and $50 article. It may be able to figure out if basic grammar is correct but other than that it can only judge quality by how many people link to that page.

Many of the sites that overtook mine are amazon.com, youtube, wallmart pages etc. They don't have great content. Nothing like a 1000 word article!!

One thing that will always remain constant about the serps is that they will always have Google ads at the top and on the right.

Crappier search results may in fact increase the Google adwords revenue from search although I know that isn't Google's game plan. That would be stupid.

The biggest thing that can be gamed with search rankings is the back links. So this has to be what Google are looking at. I'm sure Google must have a team of engineers with all the software that we use like SEnuke, Scrapebox and AMR and is trying to figure out how to counteract this kind of backlinking.

Whatever the reasons, if things don't change I'll have to start looking for other ways to make money online besides from search results!!

The messages coming out of G00gle to the mass market (webmasters) will always be directed towards their goals. You will have seen plenty of information over the course of this year from them outlining what it is they feel we should be creating for inclusion into their index. Your orginal question is spot on - what they require is not exactly what the algorythm can identify it is simply what they would like to see....the basis of the algo is and will continue to be primarily around backlinks, you can still rank a crappy piece of content (no mattter how short it is) with the right kind of backlinks....

So you think maybe they just said they are targeting bad content. Maybe slam a few big sites most of which have recovered. Move some spammy sites up and some spammy sites down and say they know what there doing. I think both surfers and webmaster can agree panda has not done anything to bring better content up in the search results. They have psyched us out into believing they have a filter than can detect unique content. I have seen webmasters saying it can detect "good" content. How would a computer know good content from bad. It could detect misspelling and grammatical errors but but whether it was actually good I do not see how.

I don't think so, an algorhytm cant determinate the quality of article can puntuate but not really apreciatte.

Its not entirely about content, but neither it is about backlinks.

Balance :P

1.Search Google for this-

Code:
how does homeopathy works

2.Open the first result.

3.Let me know its backlink or quality content! ;)

On a serious note...you have to mixup the things...

This is an extremely bad example. You can't get much lower competition than this. Of course content means very little when the on-page SEO is good with no competition.

It is an EMD.
inurl 9 results
intitle 33 results
Phrase Match " " 15.4k

That wasn't any example! I posted it just for fun...the "serious note" was written below...thanks for efforts thought..I never dug so deep for anything like this..

Matt Cutts said that Google can't possibly see all of the websites. There are too many scattered all over numerous locations and many do fall between the cracks. I guess it boils down to whether you get caught doing blackhat or not.

He also said they look at how many visitors come to the website. If you can make your site popular, you have a winner. You have to start with killer articles and videos, then do the backlinks, press releases, etc.

Content, authority, backlinks and traffic are all part of the mix; just what the ratio is all part of the Googliath secret sauce. In any case I agree with the others in this thread, it's all about making the quarterly numbers and driving AdWord revenue.

The last thing Google needs is a man power to manually check every site.
