We never know in the SEO filed any thing can happen, directory Submission isn't quite as dead yet, but it has gone through radical transformation, don’t give up on social bookmarking too Just because it is evolving doesn’t mean it’s going away.
UX is becoming more of a factor for sure.
10 years back directory submission, social bookmarking then blasting with Senuke/GSA worked,but times have changed.

The best thing is to be knowledgeable about what works, when to apply it, and be able to do it repeatedly and consistently.
Link building is a part of off-page SEO and it definitely still works. Directory submissions have always been a scam, so were social bookmarks, so I'm not sure even what you're talking about when you refer to those things being the "alive" times of SEO.

Only got smarter, they want the new websites to pay for ranking. They don't even reveal nowadays what their main update was all about. So, we can look for other alternatives for sources of traffic instead of depending only on one source. Google is patching every single possible loop hole they may find with every update. If you think SEO is tough or dead better your should look for alternative source such as youtube marketing, Linkedin, Quora etc. focus only on ROI.
