Is News Press still effective for Google Rank?

I've seen arguments on both sides here. On the one hand, press releases can definitely drive traffic to your site and increase brand awareness online but as far as providing high quality links that pass a lot of PR; I think that's debatable.
Here is an interesting (but dated) post from Danny Sullivan on questionable content being distributed around PRWeb.

gullsinn has a good point. I think if you can't find some convincing evidence that press releases are effective for your goals (and I have not found much in the way of press releases being good backlink sources) then you might want to listen to your boss.

Press release will definitely helps. Just like any links you got from authority website. The question is how many you need to be effective. It depends on your niche and your competitor website strength. Meanwhile, just build whatever links you can until you hit the road block then try Press Release.

Do what your boss says. Period. Looks like you're gathering ideas here to argue with your boss = bad strategy

But yes QUALITY press releases help with rank there are not very many high quality services..PRWEB used to be one of them but last year sometime they got caught letting something hit the wire that mentioned the name of the Big G that was false, so I immediately dropped them and went with a different, more reputable (and more expensive) service.
The key of course is to diversify your links, use a service that really screens releases (they are more credible) and dont over optimize.
