I've had some people recommend HostGator but I keep hearing about it going down, so I don't know about that. I just purchased my domain from NameCheap. I'm intending to use it to host a WP blog based site and possibly a vbulletin forum. Are most of the hosts exactly the same, or are some glaringly better than others for something as simple as my site?

I would recommend Never EVER combining your hosting with your registrar.

Hostgator is fine, I've had several sites there for years and no complaints.

Thank you for the advice, but can you please explain to me why you feel it's a bad idea to combine your hosting with your registrar? I've never heard about that concern before.

I recommend namecheap and use them myself. They have 24/7 live online support, and they are up about 99% of the time.

I had an 8 year romance with Namecheap using them for hosting and registrar. I also had domains registered a GoD. Long story short, I moved ALL of my hosting away from NC because their support was absolutely TERRIBLE when my sites went down from something on their end. I also moved all of my domain registrations away from GoD for a lot of reasons. I use HG exclusively for all on-shore hosting and NC for all registrations. I also use off-shore hosting but that's another story. I wouldn't recommend NC for hosting, just my .02

I use their hosting, and it is good. Not spectacular, but good.

Check out the sticky shared hosting offers in webhostingtalk forum. There are always nice offers, some with recurring 50% discount.
I personally would stay away with "unlimited" hosting plans, HG, GD etc.

Thank you everyone for telling me your experiences and advice. I'll put your information to good use.

I always worry about a ddos attack potentially ruining any progress I make with my site, as I've heard terrible stories about this from friends. I'm not sure exactly how to prevent them from screwing me over. Is there anything offered by any hosting that can help prevent them, or is it pretty much a situation where if someone is determined enough to get you ddos'd, it's gonna happen?
