I have a 6 months old wp blog with about 50 backlinks that I just let sitting there the last months. No new backlinks or content have been added. I want to start ading content and rank the site but when I search in Google for site:domain.com the first pages listed are FAQ, About, Contact, etc. The home page is listed 7th. Does this mean that my homepage is penalized in same why? All backlinks are to homepage only...

Check in webmaster tools to see if you have a manual penalty.

is it unique content?...these days content mostly does matter

As it is showing results for site:yourdomain.com, your site is not deindexed for sure. However, there could still be some minor penalties, the best way to check is to check the web master tools. It is okay if faq and other pages come first in the list. It does not indicate a penalty.

Hummm usually I see my root domain first with a site: search.

There are two ways to know for sure:
Check the for manual actions on all versions of your domain in GSC (ie www, non-www, http/https)
Use this tool and see if the penalty might be algorithmic and not manual: https://barracuda.digital/panguin-seo-tool/

Your site is penalized only if google search any unethical event occur or more advertise in your page and fetch that your page is only for SEO purpose and not user friendly content than it happens.

Maybe your blog undergoes pogo sticking by users, since no much thing is on the blog, but you get traffics from your backlinks , but users don't seem to find anything interesting so they "pogo stick" and google penalize sites that have lots of pogo sticking, thanks

if you dont see any manual penalty in webmaster tool then it could be real time algo issue, you can clean up your link profile or anchor text....if all of these are ok then dont worry its a matter of time to see your site doing good again.

There are some things to check this issue.

Are the content on your sub pages, better than your main page?

Do you have duplicate page Titles?

And pointing all backlinks to main page may look spammy so better distribute it across different pages.
