It will always be worth it if you think long term .

Seeing as nearly 90% of all Bitcoin has already been mined, and that most crypto today are going the Proof of Stake way instead of Proof of Work, I don't think it's wise.

Have you calculated how long it would take to get your original investment back ?

Also you said

So he has a rig that hasn't beed used before ? If you go for it, I'll make sure to verify that, would suck to buy this and having a couple of the GTX 1070 die after several months...

You will need to be patient and then recovering cost can take years.

You can't predict how much coin you can mine. That's the biggest downside from my experience. You will only be in profit after you pay your initial investment. It's hard to predict when the reward you get is based on how many computers mine the network. If you make 1 BTC today, you can't know for sure that will be the case in 3 months. And 3 months is not an exaggeration. It fluctuates a lot.

Keep in mind it's hard to sell hardware used for mining and warranty expires instantly if they find out.

Other than that, it all comes down to how cheap your electricity is.
