I'm new at Seo.. And from what i can tell, link building seems like it could be kind of blackhat..can someone explain this to me?

If you're doing a thing called "marketing" it's white. If you're hacking, spamming in order to obtain those links then it's black. Apply common sense and you will be fine ;)

Quality links make Good things happen. Spend a couple hours in this Forum and use the "Search" bar in the upper left corner to look for the answers regarding link building. Then spend the next couple of hours Doing what you just learned. Poof!! - Good Things Will Happen!

Pretty spot on with this statement.

One addition would be knowing the difference in automating vs. natural linking and paying attention to the absolute main key element, which is ' relevancy ' of the niche topic you and the links you are linking to and from being the same, otherwise, it is pointless.

Clear way to put it, topdown...well stated.

To be short if you are building paid links or building links over night than it is blackhat/ grey hat.. if you are building niche related links gradually then it is white hat,,

Thanks everyone for clarifying this helps out a lot thanks so much

If you want to build links that really SEO, google algorithms usually have to follow, so it should update algorithm where all changes of google algorithm. beg pardon if either,,,

HOW you build links determines whether its white or blackhat

That actually depends on what kind of links you are planning to build. Spam blog comments or profile backlinks, nope! They ain't considered whitehat! Links from old quality blogs with traffic sharing their feedback about your service? Yes, it is now!

It is according to your ways of sending it. Actually, link building will get white seo if you do it in right ways to promote your site by using backlink and link wheel.

not all link building are whitehat seo, because if you do make a spamming over there so it's blackhat seo. opposite this is whitehat seo... :) :)

lol, I'm surprised that this thread didn't turn into a debate :D

If you're building links for your own personal gain, it's probably blackhat ;)

According to Matt Cutts all the links that you get because of your amazing content you have on your site makes other webmaster to link to you without any of your effort is WHITE HAT everything else is Black Hat!

I hope that will clear up everything.

Black Hats erangkaian technique was performed to outsmart the search engines in order for a system to rank the best website in the search results. One technique is the manipulation of a page by creating a Page Cloaking.

as long as you get the links from the similar websites to your niche it is a whitehat seo i think.

Most sites, even well respected ones, backlink to their own site, even if just from Facebook and Twitter. As for whether or not it's blackhat, it would probably just depend on whether or not you are breaking any of Google's TOS when backlink building as Google encourages organic backlinks.

Like others, I tend to think of blackhat as something that would likely be unethical. This includes hackings sites to get links and spamming. Any link building is against Google's TOS, but it's difficult for many businesses to succeed in competitive markets without building their own links.

White hat Seo is making a site totally optimised, well produced and then filling it with content, ideas, information that is so good that other sites link to it, and it people talk about it.

Black hat Seo is using tools to make it look like you've done this (by simulating all those sites talking about your site).

Then there is everything else between, but ANY link building is black hat.
