Is keyword research more important than SEO ?

No but it is different with a site I guess.

If you want a real specific answer to all the pro's and con's. I would recommend you check out the course by Ahrefs https://ahrefs.com/academy/blogging-for-business

In short i'd say:
If you write content based on specific keywords, you will be ranked within google. This will result in long-term visitors.

If you write content not based on keywords, you will not be ranked within google. This will result in only short term visitors (in case you're making use of email list or social media update for example). If you don't make use of any of those, than you just simply won't get any visitors.

Anyone got good easy summaries of how to do KW research on a basic level?

Keyword research is not only part of good SEO, it is in fact its most vital component. @perrymason has phrased it perfectly; if SEO were a house, keyword research would be the foundation.
So yes, it is more important in the way that you won’t be able to do anything without knowing the right keywords.

Some people are able to rank sites only with good keyword research. Is keyword research more important than SEO these days ?
Yes and no. You can go for tough keywords if you have the bank, but if you are only getting started, you are better at targetting lower competition keywords.

Off page SEO comes after the keyword research, after the site build etc.

Choosing the wrong niche and wrong keywords can make or break you.

Just done a thread here on this; https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/keyword-difficulties.1229535/
