Is it wrong to target the exact same keyword in 2 separate articles that are completely different and original?

Does that cause any conflict in my Google rankings of that keyword?

Why go for the same keyword with 2 articles? I think better to choose another keyword.

Focusing 2 exact keywords in the 2 separate articles will end in the keyword CANNIBALISM.

Eg: keyword = "health benefits" in three article results in

Your keywords will rank in google, but one will compete with other.

I tried explaining this to one of my big clients but he's adamant on having 5+ articles and the homepage all optimized for one keyword. I've just been adding more words for longtails but it isn't working great.

it good to dominate first page aginst your self lol .

not really worth it number 1 spot only real winner ...

I suggest go for it if the keyword is highly competitive. But publish the articles on separate domains. This way, you can dominate the first page.

me and my competition do this in a competitive niche. I have 2 domains targeting the same keywords. My competition, which is a company, has 3-4 domains and other subdomains. :D

Using the same keyword on several pieces of content isn’t necessarily a bad idea. As one of the commenters above has said, it’s front page domination. In any case, having several articles using the same or related keywords is what niche sites do — and most of them are doing great. However, if you are using the same keywords, I recommend making the two articles answer different questions and use different secondary keywords. In the “health benefits” example above, that would be apples and onions.

Since you mentioned a client, is the keyword the company name or closely related to the business? If it is, then it should not be too horrible as people will see all of the articles related to that one keyword when they search for it. Look at it this way. The reason you make new articles is to get more unique visitors. Would you rather open more doors to your website, or make your only door wider? There's nothing wrong with making a wider door, but there are only so many people that search for this single keyword. So go ahead, make the client happy by making 5 articles with the same keyword. Go crazy and make 10 even. Then convince them to let you make some articles with different keywords.

Edit: the last part was for you, the way you commented here made you sound as if you were the OP.

Why you guys assume that article 1 is ranked on the first page? It's in the 3rd page. So I thought writing another article (bigger one) might negatively affect both articles that are targeting the same keyword causing BOTH to NOT get to first page because of same keyword

Ah that does change the situation. If you think that the second article will do better and reach the first page, you could just go for it and see what happens. The extra traffic to your site from that article might also bring new eyes to the older article. You can even link to the old article in the new one. I'm actually curious to find out what will happen...

Why don't you just update your old article and try to boost it to the first page?
