Is it worth building websites anymore? (seriously)

Seriously, after the three consecutive core updates I began to wonder if building websites is still worth it.

Unless you can build a huge authority site with absolutely great user experience and engagement, with thousands of branded searches etc, it seems like you're going nowhere. And even if you do it, you will take a hit (see it happening on my niche, with many sites, but they have been less hit - losing only 20-30%)

Let's put away spamming/parasites - even though this seems to be the only way, lol.

After 3 years of growth, one of my websites is down 5x. I was basically sent back to the beginning.

Links don't seem to matter anymore, content too. I did not manipulate my branded searches, so all I have is natural - not huge, but enough. Engagement can't be worse than the one on the competitors websites.

It seems that there's no room for new guys, everything will be taken by the old guys and that's it.
Well, I would say it's not just helpful but necessary for almost all business models. Nowadays, it's unthinkable not to have a presence on search engines, not to mention that the way you can track users on your personal website to study their personas is not even remotely comparable to what other online marketing systems allow you to do. If you want a precise idea of who you are on the web and how you can improve, having a website is essential.

Wondering the same. All my websites that used to get good traffic have been hammered for no reason. They are old tech blogs where I write content on how to guide, tutorials, tips etc. Since October, the traffic on these websites has been declining and its heading towards zero.

I wondering the same, "Is it still worth starting a website"

For the time, I plan to wait until upcoming updates and see if all these websites recover. If they don't I will exit this business and try the stock market.

You need a real content plan. constant growth in links velocity of those links and quality of the links. BAM Success

This depends on what site you are building, you need to ask yourself is the site adding anything useful to the internet?

Are you just making another website that does and says the same as hundreds or thousands of other websites already do? Are you bringing a new service/product to the internet or at least new to a location area?

If you are just creating another website which offers the same as lots of others already, what is it that makes your website so special it should outrank other websites who have been around a longer time and have proven their worth?

Totally worth is, but you have to build something real that actually serves users moving forward if you want it to survive.

there are other plenty of ways to make money online not just sites alone

I understand your PAIN, OP.

All that work.

Up in smoke.

All that time.

Flushed down the toilet.

I get it.

But as painful as your personal situation may be, NOT ALL publishers share the same fate.

While some also got penalized, to be sure.

Many did not.

So maybe the title of this thread is NOT really for ALL publishers... Instead, maybe the title is FOR YOU.

But with some points of clarification.

What steps did you follow to build?

Did you follow a SYSTEM that is FUTURE PROOF?

Or did you do what other people are doing ("conventional wisdom") and got burned while others keep chugging along?

SETBACKS are better teachers than Success because they PUSH us to retrace our steps and become more self-aware

I know this might bring COLD COMFORT to you but.... it sure remains NECESSARY.

All is not lost.

Check every single piece of content on your site

Check how you link your pages together

Check with Google's Webmaster Guidelines

Do what you need to do...

One step... at a time.

I wish you nothing but the greatest success, OP.

Good luck and take care
Damn, such a straightforward answer yet it's comforting.
